Make Your Very Own Reversible Wrap Skirt—Sewing Ze Skirt

Lately I have been showing you how to construct your very own reversible wrap skirt. Yesterday we cut out all the pieces which means today we get to sew them back together!

Start by grabbing two of your panels (make sure the panels are of the same fabric).

Place them with right sides (read, the side of the fabric you want facing out) together.

Stick some pins in to hold them together. I like to stick my pins in perpendicular to the edge of the fabric so they are easy to pull out while I sew. Bonus, if I pin this way, should I forget to pull a pin out chances are good the needle will jump right over it. Although I have been known to break needles on pins so it is a good idea to pull the pins out. Especially because sometimes the broken point of the needles goes flying and it always aims for your eye. And sometimes it succeeds. And that, my friend, really really really, really with a cherry on top, hurts. Really.

Sew the pieces together with a ½” seam allowance. You can use your sewing machine, or if you have one, this is a great time to give your surger a work out.

Repeat with the next two panels.

And then the last two panels.

Now open up two of these new larger panel sections. Lay them with right sides together and sew along one edge.

Add the 3rd panel section so you have all 6 gores sewn together.

Repeat with the reverse side fabric.

Press the seams open. If you surged them, press the seams to one side on one skirt, and press to the opposite side for the other skirt.

Now lay the two skirts together with right sides together. Pin in place.

Sew all the way around the sides and hem of the skirt. Do NOT sew the waist together.

Press the seams open, or if you surged, press the seam allowances to one side.

From the waist, turn the skirt right sides out. Press so everything lays flat and smooth.

Now edge stitch, or stitch about 1/8” from the folded edge, around the skirt to keep everything together. If you wish, you can add a second row of decorative top stitching ¼” from the folded edge.

And zere you have it. Ze skirt is sewn. Tomorrow I will show you how to make ze waistband! But only if you promise to talk with a really bad French accent all day. Cordelia has spies, so we will know if you participated or not!
